Gum Treatment

Gingivectomy is the surgical removal of the soft tissue wall of the gum pocket. The gum pocket is the space between the tooth and the surrounding gum.

What is Gingivectomy?

Gingivectomy is the surgical removal of the soft tissue wall of the gum pocket. The gum pocket is the space between the tooth and the surrounding gum tissue. If it becomes deeper than normal physiological limits, it can create an area where food particles can accumulate, leading to gum diseases. Gingivectomy reduces pocket depth by cutting and removing the gum pocket.

Gingivoplasty aims to reshape the lost physiological form of the gum to achieve a more aesthetic appearance. It is often performed after gingivectomy.

How is Gingivectomy performed?

Gingivectomy is a surgical procedure performed under local anesthesia. The duration of treatment can vary from a few minutes to an hour, depending on the number of teeth to be treated and the condition of the gum tissue. Surgical hand instruments are typically used, although rotary instruments or lasers may also be used for gingivectomy. After reshaping the gum tissue, a protective bandage is placed over the treated area, which should remain in the mouth for 10 days.
