Gingivectomy is the surgical removal of the soft tissue wall of the gum pocket. The gum pocket is the space between the tooth and the surrounding gum. If it is deeper than physiological limits, it creates space for the accumulation of nutrients.
Gingivectomy is the surgical removal of the soft tissue wall of the gum pocket. The gum pocket is the space between the tooth and the surrounding gum tissue. If it becomes deeper than physiological limits, it can create space for food accumulation and lead to gum diseases. Gingivectomy reduces pocket depth by cutting and removing the gum pocket.
Gingivoplasty aims to reshape the lost physiological form of the gum to achieve a more aesthetic appearance. It is often performed after gingivectomy.
Gingivectomy is performed when gum overgrowth occurs due to certain medications, genetic factors, or hormonal changes, reaching sizes that aesthetically bother the patient. It can also cause gum problems by facilitating food accumulation. Some patients may experience a condition known as "gummy smile," where excessive gum tissue is visible when smiling. When teeth planned for prosthetic treatment are excessively short, gingivectomy may be necessary to increase tooth size. Sometimes, gums in the front area may not align with teeth symmetry, and aligning the gum level provides patients with a more aesthetic smile. For such issues, you can plan your treatment with our experienced dentists at Cafe Diş in Kayseri to resolve your gum problems.
Gingivectomy is performed under local anesthesia. Depending on the number of teeth to be treated and the condition of the gum tissue, the treatment duration can range from a few minutes to an hour. Generally, hand instruments are used, although gingivectomy can also be performed with rotary instruments or lasers. After reshaping the gum tissue, a protective dressing is placed over the treated area. This dressing should remain in the mouth for 10 days.
The dressing is removed 7-10 days later. During this period, it is advisable to consume soft foods. Painkillers and mouthwashes prescribed by your dentist should be used regularly. Minor bleeding may occur on the first day, which will gradually decrease and stop. Gum tissues will return to their normal appearance after about 1 month, and complete healing requires at least 7 weeks.
