This treatment is considered safer because it is performed under the supervision of a doctor. It yields quick results and has a high success rate. Before starting the treatment, the condition of the teeth is recorded using a color scale and a camera. The number of sessions required usually varies between 2 and 3, depending on the degree of discoloration. Before the procedure, a protective barrier is placed over the gums to prevent any damage. Then, a whitening gel (containing hydrogen peroxide and its derivatives) is applied to the teeth. The gel is applied to the teeth in 15-minute intervals, typically for 2 or 3 periods. Between sessions, patients are advised to avoid staining foods (such as tea, coffee, wine) and minimize smoking. Sensitivity may occur between whitening sessions, but this can be managed with sensitivity-reducing toothpaste.
A mold is created by taking an impression of the patient’s teeth. A custom tray is made for the patient to place the whitening agent inside the mouth. A 10-15% carbamide peroxide gel is used. The tray is worn for at least 4-6 hours a day over an average period of 10-15 days, or it can be used during sleep for 8-10 days. It's important not to apply more gel than recommended in home whitening treatments. Excess gel can overflow from the tray and irritate the gums. If this happens, rinse the gums immediately and apply a cream containing vitamin E to the irritated area, and contact your dentist.
Additionally, patients can use Strip Whitening Systems and Paint-On Whitening Systems at home. In the Strip Whitening System, polyethylene strips infused with a whitening agent are adhered to the teeth, requiring no tray. In the Paint-On Whitening System, a whitening gel is painted onto the teeth with an applicator brush, like nail polish, and left on for a certain period (30-60 minutes) before normal tooth brushing. These systems provide a good alternative for patients who do not want to use trays or strips and can also be applied to irregular teeth.
This technique uses a mixture of sodium perborate and distilled water. The mixture is placed in the pulp chamber, and the area is sealed with a temporary barrier. It is left in place until the desired whiteness is achieved. Once the treatment is complete, the whitening agent is removed, and the restoration is finalized.
